There are good beaches for snorkeling and diving a few kilometers outside Dili. East Timor has kilometer after kilometer of pristine coral reefs that are home to a vast diversity of marine life.

The most popular beach is the sheltered cove of Areia Branca (“white sand”) and it is very accessible from Dili by car. East Timor has fine sandy beaches, rocky mountains and a lush interior with classic Portuguese colonial style architecture in a welcoming tropical environmental. East Timor is well-known eco-tourism with excellent scuba diving sites at the cost of the country.

Large groups of migrating whales are often seen in the deep waters between Ataúro Island and Dili and dolphins are also common in the waters all around the island, particularly in the Manatuto and Carimbala Liquisa districts and in Tutuala in Lospalos.
