Political Stability in East-Timor

Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, assesses that the country is heading towards a period of “long-term peace, stability and development”. On His latest report to the UN’s Security Council, Ki-Moon states that Timor-Leste is entering a “crucial” period to determine whether the country is overcoming its political and institutional frailties that led to the crisis of 2006. Until the upcoming legislative elections, in the first semester of 2012, the United Nation’s contingent in the country will remain with up to 1280 officers.

For that matter, Prime-Minister Xanana Gusmão, will go to New York to communicate that the country steel needs the United Nation’s assistance until 2012, while the Timorese authorities work on a plan to retreat without negative effects to the country. "In 2012 we will of course focus on the general elections, with the assistance of UNMIT, but we are also starting to plan the transition, so that UN’s mission, doesn’t have an impact on us", the Prime-Minister declared.
